Hobbits do age differently from humans, if I recall correctly that's meant to be like... Early 30s in human terms?

Thirty-something, at least, but there's still a lot of growing up happening between Elijah Wood's portrayal of him and the age he was in the book (oldest of the hobbits by far, to mention just one thing)

Sure, but it's more like mid-30s to early 20s, which sounds a lot less dramatic.

I do think Wood was too young, just saying, it's not so dramatic as all that.

TBH I do mentally picture Frodo with a receding hairline.

Adulthood for hobbits is 33 - I presume that to be equivalent of 21, because of the era Tolkien was writing in (i.e. before age of majority was moved down to 18). Keep in mind there are plenty of actors around showbiz who don't look "old" in their mid thirties and apply that concept to 50-year-old Frodo. He doesn't need a receding hairline, but he might look more mature than Elijah Wood did.

My beef with the movies is that Merry and Pippin were adults at the birthday party, but that's linked into the the removal of those intervening 17 years. Merry and Pippin would have been young children at the party, if one goes by book ages, dates and uncompressed timeline.

Oh, I mostly agree with you. I'm not saying that Frodo would have to have a receding hairline to be realistic in terms of age. I just picture him that way. It's just some weird headcanon I have. Very specific physical appearance.

Okay, yeah.

That does make me think that there are men who have receding hairlines even at 21. I have an impression my Dad did (he's been bald on top in all my memory).
