Re: Question about Tumblr

I guess my question is: what made the younger segments of the fandom adopt it, rather than some other alternative to LJ or some other site? Was it just random chance? Was it just the image-sharing capabilities that you mention?

Not sure. Instant gratification? Growing up in a slightly different technological environment? Wanting to be different from older people? I wasn't in fandom as a teen so it's hard for me to say.

being one of those younger ones (when i first used tumblr), I'll try to answer your question from my experience.

tumblr was trending with my friend group at the time, it had lots of funny picture posts, and i was very shy so being able to be a silent blogger without having to add anything to reblogged posts made me really like it.
The people there were friendly to me and I made several several skype friends, I liked tumblrs blog designs too and I felt I could see a little bit of someones personality in their blog theme or content, and if a popular blogger followed me, man that made my day.
The image sharing made me stay because at the time my thoughts were very along the lines of "i have to consume every piece of pop culture and meme and fanart ever" and combine with the instant gratification of reblog, like, see more, reblog, like, see more, it sort of sucked me in because it was exciting to a young me. That and i kept forgetting my password for livejournal and no one seemed very friendly at the time :( probably just wrong places at the wrong time though, because I've been browsing LJ and DW a lot more than tumblr lately. (more chill)
