Her writing was all over the place, to the point where I would honestly call some big moments OOC (even though that's not a term I would usually apply to canon material). And because of this she came across as being wishy-washy and maybe even emotionally immature and/or dishonest.
When she was following Kirk's footsteps and Ripley-ing it up in Trek tactical gear with a BFG she was great. When she was following Picard's footsteps and taking a thoughtful, diplomatic, over-empathetic approach she was great. But just like you can't really smash Kirk and Picard into one person and expect to get something that makes sense, SHE often didn't make a lot of sense. This is fine for a real person, people are complicated, but bad for a lead protagonist in a schlocky scifi show.
