I've been both physically and emotionally abused.

All in all, the emotional abuse did the greater damage. Mostly because there weren't people around to treat the cruel words, blackmail, possessiveness, threats, etc for the horrible things they were.

Sure, reacting physically to an emotional jab is a no-no. But let's not pretend being a lying or abrasive asshole to someone doesn't leave some kind of scar.
