saying this as someone who played the first one before i played HR (never touched the second lul) it's a good game and it does hold up really well for its age and i enjoyed playing it, blah blah.

but why is it always so unbelievable how people would rather play new games rather than the first few attempts that the industry put out? this is more of a generally-related question to the secret than entirely directed at op, i just find it really odd when i see people acting like you HAVE to have played these games to be a fan/true gamer/whatever. i never had a pc capable for most games until i was 18, and never had a console, so i missed out on basically everything nintendo and a lot of the 2000s stuff but i don't feel the need to go back and play those things either.

it's not so much that people have to play it more like, i dunno, i feel like people are missing out on something really great because they haven't even checked it out. i get the same way about morrowind, it's genuinely good but people don't bother with it because of its age. i see a lot of people unwilling to try games from that era, the kind of 1995-2005 golden age, and it just makes me sorta sad. for me at least it's less of a cultural capital thing and more of a "but it's good and you'd like it if you tried it" thing.

also i don't think the industry has actually improved at making games since then, at least not by a significant margin, it's just changed. things have been getting shinier, but rising development costs have really discouraged experimentation and the increased focus on games being easy to pick up has lead to devs making games with less mechanical depth in them as a shortcut. the only devs i'm genuinely interested in these days are basically old industry vets like amy hennig and yoko taro or medium-size studios who put stuff out on steam.
