I'd prefer the show without her in it, to be honest, totally ruined it for me. I can't stand her, she makes me sick.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
y'all are weird

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. You know, I can't say that I agree about getting into the fandom, but that's maybe because most of the things that I care most about, I only found out about after they were long dead. And also, like, the enjoyment of watching a show is separate from the joy of being in fandom, and justifiable on its own to me.

That said, I'm sorry you feel that way, the show had a lot of really strong moments and did a lot of really interesting things. I think it's very enjoyable and she's very good in it.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she was good. Good at ruining everything that was good and beautiful about the show.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What did you like about the show that you thought she ruined?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair question. And I wish I could tell you exactly what she's ruined, but that's very difficult to pinpoint when all it takes is for her to rear her annoying head in the scene to make it completely unwatchable for me.

Do you dislike the character more, or the actress

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The character would have been fine (didn't like how she was written sometimes, but could deal with that). It's the actress that I can't stand, at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
So is this one of those things where you just don't like someone's face or voice?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, both, in this case.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, fair enough, but I have to say it does seem a little odd to run around yelling about how an actress completely ruined a show when actually you mean that they ruined it for you because of a personal and admittedly irrational distaste for them as an actress

It's like if I ran around telling everyone that a restaurant is awful because they serve cauliflower and I happen to be allergic to cauliflower. It's definitely something to be aware of if you also happen to be allergic to cauliflower, but it's not really a generally applicable point about the restaurant.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
If we're gonna use the cauliflower analogy, then it's more like this: There's a dish you love, it's your favorite dish and you look forward to having it every week. Most importantly, it doesn't contain cauliflower.

Then, one day, the cook decides to add cauliflower. At first, it's just a little bit and you can pick it out and can still enjoy your favorite dish. Then the cook starts adding more and more of cauliflower each week. In fact, the cook decides the cauliflower is so important it should become of the main ingredients. Eventually, your favorite dish is 1/3 cauliflower which makes it impossible for you to enjoy it any longer.

Okay, let's stop with the cauliflower for the moment...I don't think my dislike is irrational, not completely. I said I could stand her as a character if she wasn't played by Amy Acker, but that doesn't mean I don't think the amount of screentime the character got was pointless; I still think she was made much more important than she should have and has took away screentime from the other actually likeable characters. She made the awful S4 storyline even worse. I'm not the only one who feels this way, obviously, since the show got canceled and I'm happy it did, it was an act of mercy. They barely managed to get a half-season to wrap things up. I was gonna watch it, but since Root is now the voice of the machine and basically immortal, I'm done with this shit of a show.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The point of the analogy is that the cauliflower isn't bad. It's just that you happen to have, for whatever reason, an allergy to cauliflower. If someone wasn't allergic to cauliflower, they would probably quite like the restaurant. And probably would not feel that the inclusion of cauliflower in a dish ruined the whole restaurant experience. And it genuinely sucks for you that the cauliflower ruined your experience! I'm not saying it doesn't. It sucks that it had to be that way. But to run around saying that the restaurant is objectively bad because they included an ingredient that you happen to be allergic to doesn't make sense to me.

Like, it sucks that you don't like Root and her increasing screen time made you like the show less. That doesn't mean that Root isn't a likable character, though. That doesn't mean she's a bad character. It means that you don't like her because, for whatever reason, you really hate Amy Acker. There is a really basic and obvious distinction between those things that you don't seem to acknowledge. And I acknowledge that you think the character got too much screen time even if she was not played by Amy Acker, but there's a gap between "got too much screen time" and "ruined the show".

Also, like, PoI was never really a ratings hit and blaming its cancellation on Amy Acker personally is just factually wrong. Sorry. Like, seriously, "I stopped watching it for reason X; other people also stopped watching it; therefore, they must have stopped watching it for reason X" is just not logically coherent.

Maybe if you hurry up and marathon it now you can still catch fandom while it's hot. Some fandoms can still go strong a couple years after the show ended.

Is this PoI? Is it over?

Someone could be forgiven for not knowing she was in, say, Dollhouse, but I see Shaw/Root crap everywhere. Then again, my online friends are very femslashy, and I guess that's not the typical internet experience.

nayrt

I'm with the OP. My online friends were PoI PoI PoI all the time, but not one of them mentioned that Root was played by Amy Acker, and not one of them posted a photo that included her* - so like the OP, I was completely unaware she was in the series until it was actually over.

*Mind you they were all slashing Reese and Finch, so perhaps it's not surprising.

I ship Reese/Finch, too, though I've only watched the first episode of PoI.
