kill your darlings (a writing thread)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I just wrote almost a whole chapter before realizing it doesn't really fit in my story at all.

What's the general consensus on fanfic "deleted scenes"? Because I like it a lot but it just gets too far away from what the story is.

Can you turn it into a one-shot?

Post it anyway. There's nothing wrong with writing missing scenes, which is what I've always seen them called. They're quite common! :)

Post it at the end of the fic as a "DVD extra."

Just save it somewhere else and move on to the story. Its what I do.

Post it as a stand alone with a note explaining it's for the longer fic, but it just didn't fit in.

I'm with the folks saying post it as a one-shot. One ooooold fanfic writer I used to read 10+ years ago did that, and I quite enjoyed the one-shot that resulted! (More than the original fic, honestly, which I can't really remember.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Since everyone is answering pretty much the exact same way, I feel like I need to ask how I should have worded the original post better. Because clearly I did something wrong.

Because I wasn't asking what I should do with this chapter. If I do anything with it, it'll just be an "extra" at the end of the fic, (because it's not suited to be a one-shot by itself, I don't think) and I was wondering what people think when they see that? Do they like them? Dislike them? Ignore them? Think less of the writer for not being able to make it fit? That's what I was wanting to know; can someone tell me what in the first post was unclear so I can post better next time?

I'd read it, and wouldn't think any less of an author for including a "deleted scene."
