Behind the times question...

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
So, I still rent movies from a video shop. Or I did until my local shop closed down - no surprise there, it was the last of a dying breed. But now I have no idea how to see new release movies without having to actually buy them outright. How do people do this these days?

Pirate, borrow from friends, hope your local library has a decent selection (mine does, but you have to get on the waitlist early or it won't be new by the time you get it)

If you're opposed to pirating, check your local library. The other thing to note is to see if your library is part of a network. I'm in the US and in my state each county has their own local network of libraries so within all of the libraries, they share. So my library may not have something, but I can get it transferred easily to my local library.

It's the only way I'm able to watch a lot of foreign films.

NAYRT, but I hope your local libraries are better than mine in the DVD department. mine mostly has movies for really little kids and PBS type documentaries, which is fine if that's all you want.

My library has pretty much everything. Or at least the library system does. Basically the only things I can't get are films that screen exclusively at film festivals, even still I can get the popular ones.

Plus, I can talk to the librarian and request movies be added to the collection.

Redbox, OnDemand, Netflix, renting from Amazon/YouTube, etc.

You could always do Netflix or find a movie rental kiosk (like Redbox, usually located by a Wal-Mart or a CVS/Walgreens/drug store chain).

I'd say pirate but KAT got taken down the other day. :/ Until a replacement arises I'd say consider a streaming video account like Hulu or Netflix. (Though Netflix has a terrible selection)

If you have cable, a lot of them will let you 'rent' new releases for $4-$5, and often older releases for free.

Seconding rental kiosks. I especially love the ones in grocery stores because it's a good excuse to get some ice cream with my movie.

I get stufff from the library. If it's a very new release of a popular movie, I might need to put in a request and wait a while, but eventually I can watch it for free.
