There are couples out there with open relationships.

There are couples who are on again/off again and take "breaks".

There really are men who discover they're bisexual/gay later in life and have to figure out what that means for their current relationship. Sometimes they stay together, sometimes they break up and even stay friends.

Or you could just go the AU route if you wanted.
