Re: Slightly OT
(Anonymous) 2016-07-25 08:51 am (UTC)(link)I.e. I was sympathetic to the guy in "Rude" by Magic because I thought he was a black guy in an interracial relationship. Finding out he was white? No wonder the dad won't give his blessing, he's a goddamn hipster! (Okay that was partly the MV's fault, but still.)
Re: Slightly OT
But hey, the context of who is singing the song does make a difference! I mean, just as an example, Johnny Cash sings 'Hurt' and even though I don't know very much about him OR the original singer as people, just the fact that Cash is audibly old makes the song feel different, for me at least. Reznor, it turns out, wasn't quite thirty when the song was released, and while a song about the pain of addiction is sad from a young person, it's about a lost future. From an old person, it's about a squandered past. That context makes a big difference!
Another example (though less famous) is... well, I've NEVER liked the song 'Creep.' But I really love Annie Elainey's rendition of it, and not just because of the different style she does it in. The song's context is VERY different when sung by someone disabled in a wheelchair, and while my disabilities are mental, not physical, it suddenly becomes something I can identify with.
