It's the mechs themselves I could care less about, which is probably why I grew tired of Gundam Wing halfway through it last week. I liked Escaflowne (and Geass) because I can focus more on the characters than the giant powerful fighting things. Character and a relatively clear sense of direction for the story are two things I simply need to have done well in anything I enjoy, whether it's anime, manga, TV show, movie, etc. Politics, romance, battle, and slashy subtext can add to my enjoyment, but they aren't my focus.

The manhwa I love to pieces is called Let Dai. The title character, Dai Lee, is an arrogant, manipulative asshole you want to hate for the longest time, but when you read more and find out why he is the way he is towards everyone, especially the only person he loves, you can't help but feel sorry for him. Gang rape is treated right in it, and I sobbed in public three times as I read one of the volumes. 1-11 of 15 have been released in English.

For the record, Gundam Wing sucks. *brick'd* I'm a big fan of the original Gundam as well as the new one, Gundam 00, so I can safely say that while the Gundam series carries a lot of similarities through incarnations, they are significantly different from one incarnation to the next.

That said, I'd rec Macross Plus as one of the best damn mecha shows ever (though it was really much less mecha than typical Macross and more drama), and one of my personal favourites is Argentosoma.

Mecha really falls more into sub-genres - shows like Gundam and Macross go the political/warfare route, stuff like Gurren Lagann goes oldschool lighthearted, Patlabor is another lighter and much more realistic title, and post-Evangelion titles like Argentosoma and Rahxephon lean more toward the psychological protagonist-torture.

So yeah, somewhere in my rambling is the point that being a mecha anime doesn't say much about a show other than 'there will be giant robots'. I think very few people are really interested specifically in the mechs - using mechs as a medium for a story or development for a character is the appeal. Also, everything's more epic when it's BIG!!!

Since I know a lot of people have said good things about it, I may watch a couple episodes of Gundam 00 once I switch to my new computer just to see what I think of it, but if it doesn't pass the three episode test, I won't hang around it longer.

I will admit to knowing absolutely nothing about the rest of the shows you said. My obsession with character tends to make me really picky, unfortunately, and I have a current obsession with antiheroes and twisted assholes. A friend RPing Lelouch is what made me watch Code Geass in the first place, if that says anything.

And I realize that mecha, like magical girl or a fighting-driven series, just gives you a sense of what to expect. That's what genres do, after all. I'm simply a sucker for awesome characters and I haven't really heard of mecha shows where I can get that.

...then again, I am relatively new to anime, as I usually prefer games and manga.
