Characters you've grown to love more over time

(Anonymous) 2016-07-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be characters you used to love, but now love with the power of a thousand suns.

Can be characters you used to be fine with or neutral about, but began to like them more and more until you started loving them.

Can be characters you used to dislike or be meh about, but eventually grew to love.

Just tell us about them here!

Skyler on Breaking Bad. Hated her at first but grew to really enjoy her character.

Jaime on Game of Thrones. I didn't realize One Handed Hobo was the one who fucked his sister. Though, how much I like Jaime is determined by how far away from Cersei he is.

Clint Barton in the MCU. I went from neutral about him to liking him more in each movie.

Steve Rogers. I really dislike the first Captain America so was never into him. He was also sort of an ass in the first Avengers movie (upon rewatches I enjoy his character more). It wasn't until The Winter Soldier that I fell in love with him. ♥‿♥

Harry Potter. I always liked him but I used to like other characters a lot more. But over the last couple years he's become one of my favorites. His sense of humor is highly underappreciated. And I relate to him more than I used to.

As a kid, Harry seemed annoyingly indifferent to me, but I don't think he was ever as indifferent as he seemed. It was just that next to Ron's wry understatements and/or OMGWTFBBQs and Hermione's constant OMGWTFBBQs, his more subtle reactions were missed, as well as his humor (like you said). After OoTP he stopped being subtle and went the other way, but I liked that, and still do. People also forget that in PoA, he all but played Fudge like a fiddle in whatever chapter Fudge met him at Diagon Alley.

He was definitely more subtle than the others, which makes sense since he was raised to stay out of the way as much as possible. And I'm also a big defender of him being less subtle in OotP. I certainly wouldn't be reacting any better than him in his situation.

The cast of Les Miserables. I hated them all as a child. I kind of like the cop and the guy he's chasing now. (Apparently not enough to remember their names though, sorry.)

I initially really disliked Hank on Breaking Bad, but came to really love him in his Hank way.

I used to be very meh re: Tony Stark, either, but my fiancé converted me and I love him now.. I was very indifferent to Bucky, too, but he's grown on me a lot.

For awhile on Orange is the New Black, I REALLY disliked a handful of characters (Big Boo and Yoga Jones come to mind). I stopped disliking them and really like their part in the story these days (Big Boo especially).

Elrond and Galadriel from LOTR. I used to like them quite a lot when I read LOTR, but wasn't very interested in them at all. They were just kind of there, and a lot of things they said were boring because they seemed to have nothing to do with anything (ie, they were Silmarillion references).

Then I read the Silmarillion, which perked up my interest because now I understood those references, and then I read "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn" (which lol is a very misleading title because it's entirely about Galadriel and Elrond and Celebrimbor and Khazad-dum and Sauron and his Ring shenanigans and invasions during the 2nd Age and barely anything to do with Celeborn) from the Unfinished Tales and OH MY GOD.

Both of them. Made me actually shiver with delight and satisfaction reading about them. Such beautiful satisfying amazing people with so many buckets of fascinating fanfic/fanon potential. Elrond actually made me cry.

I was very indifferent-to-disliking of Usagi from Sailor Moon when first introduced to the character, but then realized over the seasons that her growth was the focal point of the series and that she is a dramatically different person by the end, while the rest of the characters more or less stay the same. Now she's probably my favourite.

I know he wouldn't appreciate it, but so do I. Let me love you Boone.

Anakin Skywalker. I recently rewatched the prequels after originally seeing them in theaters and pretty much hating them but...they weren't really that bad? And Hayden Christensen is a fantastic actor.

And now I'm watching The Clone Wars and pretty much Team Anakin on everything because the Jedi Council is terrible. (Just got to the deception arc in Season 4. The plan was fine, but letting Anakin and Ahsoka suffer like that? There's a war going on. The Council couldn't have sent them away from Coruscant to somewhere with shit communication for a while?)

I used to find Sauron kind of interesting as a villain. But it wasn't until I read the Silmarillion that he became a favorite character. And he's becoming more and more so the longer I am in fandom.

I also love Celebrimbor more and more the more I think about different periods of his life. His end is fascinating, but there are so many other fascinating periods too.

I'd still say I'm a Dean girl (because he's the one I both most want to bang, and most identify with) but rewatching Supernatural I've become a lot more sympathetic to Sam, until I love him almost as much as Dean.

Sansa Stark -- when I read the first book of ASOIAF, I (like most people) dismissed Sansa as the familiarly trite character foil to Arya, who was clearly going to become more of a main character because she was a tomboy and therefore cool, and I had been a tomboy and therefore could relate to her.

And then I got to Sansa's final POV chapter, where her physical abuse on Joffrey's command begins.

[This would fit in with the thread I started below, because my feelings changed after one sentence.]

At the end of the chapter, Joffrey has had her beaten and dragged up on the ramparts of the castle. She's contemplating pushing him and herself off the wall to their deaths, and the Hound notices this and steps between them and gently dabs away the blood on Sansa's split lip, and for that she thanks him because -- as the last sentence says -- "she was a good girl and always remembered her courtesies."

I felt so badly for her then, my whole attitude toward her changed. She's now my favorite character in the books. (Show-Sansa has become a separate character altogether, IMO.)

Sansa for me too, though I've always loved her. In the beginning it was mostly due to relating to her and her relationship with Arya as it reminded me of the one I had with my Arya-like sister when we were younger, but it has just grown from there. She's my absolute favourite in both books and show, though I agree show!Sansa is pretty much a different character at this point.

Jenkins from The Librarians. At first, I very much didn't like him, but as the series progressed, I found him more and more interesting, till by the end he was one of my favorites!
