I was surprised by the complaints about comment padding, too, but there was a thread here a few months ago (I'd never be able to find it now) where almost everyone was against author replies and accused authors of padding their count with them.

Look, I reply to every single comment I get. But when you get like 300 kudos on a fic and 2 comments, you do start to wonder why you're bothering posting fic at all. And then secrets like this come along, and it only reaffirms that readers don't deserve your time and work.

I hear you on the lack of comments :(
It can be disheartening. But although I've gotten better at leaving them lately, I know I pretty shy and unsure about commenting and didn't for a long time myself - not even counting that I know people don't always have the time/attention-span/English language skills, etc. I decided I don't mind posting my stuff anyhow - for all the younger me-s out there who might be reading & enjoying secretly.

But, yeah, a lot of readers and writers are very entitled - to content and comments respectively. I was really surprised by the amount of people who agreed with the comment padding secret.
But, hey, I can't change the world, only cultivate the kind of environment and readership I want my fic to have. And this might be entitled of me - but I know I get kind of unenthusiastic about leaving comments for fic writers who don't respond back, because one of the big conceits of fic in the first place is creating a dialogue about a piece of media. So if people are scared away from my own stories by 'comment-padding', they're people who probably didn't want to have the discussions I wanted to have in the first place. So it's probably for the best.

I'm sorry if your fic doesn't get that kind of attention, but I'm not working my ass off for kudos.

I agree. That did come across as humblebragging.

My fics vary. I also work my ass off on fics. Some, I get hundreds of kudos. Others, I get barely none at all, even if they're in the same fandom as the ones I get hundreds of kudos for. Go figure!

I always reply to comments. Sometimes a really nice dialogue is set up.
