Because Mara was independent without Luke and didn't depend on him in the EU. I love her because she wasn't developed as a romantic interest for him, they were equals and had their own strengths and weaknesses.

I miss her, but I'm so glad Jaina Solo won the Hasbro fan vote for SDCC. I will buy her character when they release it.
