Language is a big difference. Pretty sure I'd have a harder time in Tokyo than in London.

Sure. But you'll also get that in Italy, or France, or Germany.

(especially Italy, in my experience)

Didn't have trouble in Italy. There's some frame of reference for romance languages. As opposed to Japanese or Russian or Greek or any language that doesn't use the same alphabet. For me, anyway.

I disagree. Those countries have far higher numbers of tourists in the bigger cities and there's more infrastructure to accommodate people who don't speak the local language. Also, the signs won't be in kanji.

I've been to Japan and Germany and I disagree. There are plenty of places even in Tokyo where signs and such aren't written in English.
