I will try to reply the most when:

1) It's a comment on a WIP, because then I feel like they may come back for more, and we can develop some sort of actual relationship.

2) Somebody starts running through all my fics and commenting on all of them. Since clearly they like my stuff more than just one fic, I will try to strike up conversation with them and generally thank them for their interest. Most disheartening is when one of my oneshots gets a "this was great, write more!" and the reader doesn't check out my author page or read anything else and it's like...............I did write more...............

3) A content-heavy comment where I feel there's something to reply to more than just "thanks".

4) if a comment comes during a dry spell, when I haven't gotten many comments in a while, or during a time when I happen to be free to respond almost immediately. Sometimes I remember a month later that I somehow didn't reply, and then I feel really awkward showing up with "thank you!" so late...
