I've been to NYC and survived so maybe I could survive Tokyo!

how adventurous are you in eating? That's definitely a concern if you have allergies because the Japanese are not the best with this, or if you're a vegetarian that's a major issue if you don't speak Japanese.

Best of luck!

I am not a vegetarian. Not a huge fan of fish though, which could be a problem.

I don't eat much seafood myself and it was manageable. I do eat tuna and salmon sushi, but that's pretty much it. As long as you can tolerate fish flakes or things being cooked in fish broth. If I don't know it, I didn't seem to mind much.

I know this is a terrible habit, but I did eat at McDonald's a bit and was fortunate enough to have a school cafeteria for lunch. Convenience store onigiri and stand ramen were pretty good.

Generally I don't eat much so it was pretty easy to keep me fed, but I had a few "accidents" where I'd order something and it was not what I thought. It looked like breaded pork cutlet but it was bread shrimp patty. Very strange.

Just if you have a strict diet (kosher/Muslim/vegetarian) and can't communicate in Japanese, then you'd have an issue because they don't always understand food allergies the way the US does.

Japanese diet is full of non fish dishes! there's curry, noodle soups, yakitori, okonomiyaki, omurice, nabe, shabu shabu and such. you can inform yourself beforehand and then eat yourself through the city - I promise it's worth it, I love Japanese food. also definitely try the baked sweets and cakes. unf...

Haha nayrt but having lived as a vegetarian for several years in Japan, I can attest, people have very little concept of vegetarianism. Questions such as "does this have meat in it? I don't eat meat" tends to be interpreted as, "are there big chunks of meat?" and small bits of bacon or meat broth are rarely thought of. My Japan life hack ended up being telling restaurant staff I have a meat allergy.
