Re: Showerthoughts thread
But, why then, do viruses even exist? Especially since they require the machinery of other organisms to spread? TBH, I don't know for sure. I don't know where the first virus came from, so I can't answer that, but as for why they exist? It's because viruses are efficient! Sure, they need other organism's to grow, but that means they can exist without a lot of extra "baggage".
That being said, viruses that kill a lot of people are actually doing a shit job, as far as viruses go? Sure, things like Ebola Zaire have a 90% mortality rate (which is scary!) but they tend to burn out of their hosts really quickly. When that happens, the virus ends up dying out unless a natural reservoir exists. For instance, bird flu in birds, swine flu in pigs, rabies in bats, etc.
Even the 1918 flu pandemic that killed a metric fuckton of people? Only actually killed 10-20% (source: wikipedia, since I don't have my textbooks with me) of the people it infected! Because it "needed" people to be able to walk around as carriers and infect people further. The people that died died due to other complications with the virus, such as their age, immunological status, etc.; the virus didn't kill willy nilly!
Does that help/make sense? Or would you like me to clarify anything? (No sarcasm intended!)
