I liked Sherlock in the beginning, too, but the problem is the writing is not as smart as it thinks it is.

Yeah, I think that describes it well. It's entertaining and funny, but not as clever as the writers seem to believe. Sometimes the self-congratulatory attitude of this show gets to me.

Yes. I mean, it's decent writing, but the smugness about it is sometimes borderline embarrassing.
