From Indiana. I have never heard anyone call a kid "sir" or "ma'am" unless they're playing at treating them like an adult.

I am really curious as to what people think of people from Indiana, aside from our horrible politics (I promise I didn't vote for Pence guys!). It'll be especially interesting because a large part of our state is comprised of rural people who have a rural culture I really don't identify with at all.

Indiana makes me think of A Christmas Story. And a friend of mine who's also from there. I don't think I know any stereotypes about people from Indiana.

Ugh, I sympathize with you on the "horrible politics" thing. I'm the Iowa anon from above and I cringe every time Steve King or Joni Ernst open their mouths.

Course, my state's also a little more liberal than I think some people tend to expect, too-I remember people being utterly surprised when our state legalized same-sex marriage in 2009, but it didn't really surprise me that much.

I also understand what you mean about rural culture. I live in a small city of nearly 30,000 people and my experiences are definitely different from those who've spent their lives living in towns that have a population of only a couple hundred or so (if that).

I live in Indianapolis, so it's definitely very different! Though in some areas of the city the rural culture bleeds in - and actually a lot of people who live at my apartment complex (not actually a rural area, but close to city limits) are what I'd characterize as rednecks. Like, a LOT of them.

AYRT

Same here! I know a few people in town who would fit that characterization, definitely.

I've driven through Indiana, but it was the very northern part, like, right along the Indiana/Michigan border. I mainly remember the town of Gary, which was...an interesting trip, and then a lot of open area. I imagine it would be a bit jarring to go from that to a city like Indianapolis. But it'd be fun, too, when you want to do things that you may not be able to do as easily in a small town.

Yeah, Indianapolis is REALLY different. I haven't spent much time in northern Indiana though except en route to Chicago (and Gary is basically a suburb of Chicago as far as I'm concerned)

Oh God save us, Steve King. I can't believe he represents my district.

I just wonder how you deal with the flatness. I hear things are bumpier in the south, but what I've seen of the north and around Indiamapolis was very, very flat. We're talking Fargo-Winnipeg Red River Valley levels if flat. I'm not from a mountain or Appalachian state and I think Indiana is too flat.

I'm not sure what you mean? Yes, it is in fact very flat, but there's nothing specific to "deal" with about it
