The funeral procession thing is only in the south? Gosh, it seems discourteous to do otherwise, that's so odd.

I'm not sure. I've only ever seen it in the South. The few Northern funerals I've been to didn't do it. They do it in Oklahoma, but OK is technically part of the South. So not sure about the proper Midwest or West coast.
