No, but reblogs or replies to posts works fine for that.

No, actually, they don't.

For me and for my fandoms they seem to. Doesn't mean I think it works for everyone. But it does personally work for me.

Going through hundreds of notes to see who has reblogged with a comment, and then go through those to find the other discussions threads - well, it's possible, I'll give, but I'll still say that the LJ models is a hundred times easier to use for conversation.

I hate that so much. I wish you could sort notes by type so I could look for replies and reblogs with commentary without having to scroll past dozens of likes between each one.

But tumblr does do that? When was the last time you used it?

Oh it does? Awesome!

I got frustrated and kind of wandered away from it for a while. Maybe I'll go see if there are any other nice features added since then.

On Tumblr, you also can't have a conversation which is both private and allows more than two persons to participate. It's one or the other. On the LJ clones you can lock a post to just your followers so you can talk to several people in a thread all at once without having to let literally anyone on the planet participate.

On Tumblr, if you make a sensitive post, you have to hold your breath and trust that some totally random stranger with a lot of followers who wants to make you look bad doesn't find it and spread it around, thus inviting a nonstop swarm of horrible anons into your inbox and reblogs with nasty comments and tags. On LJ clones, you lock the sensitive post to your followers, and if it still gets spread around then you know which of your friends you can't trust.

Also, yes, you can have good conversations on Tumblr. You just can't have any involving long paragraphs of complicated, nuanced information. If I have to put a post under a cut, there's like a fifty percent drop in people who'd stop to read it.

And every time someone you follow responds to an ask or reply publicly, their whole dash sees it. If they're super popular,or the discussion is intense, it can take over your entire dash for hours. This is even worse if it's about something you really don't want to hear about (and they keep forgetting to tag it)

Ugh. Yeah I hate the no privacy thing on tumblr. It would be great if there were some kind of group chat/forum function where only certain members can post.

Sounds like you don't have a tumblr. A new-ish tumblr update shows people who added onto the post first when you click on it.

You don't have to go through hundreds of notes anymore, now it shows the ones with comments first.

That's got to be a very recent development, because I can't remember it being present when I was browsing last night :/

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, actually they do. Maybe it's because all my fandoms most activity is based on tumblr but I have seen plenty of sustained discussions. It's different and takes some getting used to but it can work.

Sure, they work fine as long as you don't mind not being able to easily converse and follow a conversation thread that has more than two people in it. For most people, that really doesn't fit the definition of "works fine" and ayrt specifically said "where lots of people can discuss a topic together at the same time".
