I think the thing that bothers me isn't so much 'this crossdressing character is trans' as much as 'this crossdressing character is trans and the creator is transphobic trash for not realizing it', which I see constantly for characters from anime or Japanese video games. Maybe I was just a little too into visual kei when I was younger, but I get pretty uncomfortable when I see people lashing out so viciously towards Japanese creators when it's just... well, a different culture.
