World War I, sorry for being pedantic.

I think he said he lost most of his friends in the war, so it does make sense. :(

Well, he died in 1972, so he went through WWII as well (yes, as a civillian, but all of the UK was heavily affected by the war). Admittedly he had a much better WWII than WWI - Oxford was hardly bombed at all, allegedly because Hitler wanted to make it the capital of a conquered Britain, and his kids all made it through - but it still must have been a sad and difficult time, and I expect it did have some impact on his work, even if the theory that LOTR is an allegory of WWII is nonsense.

Yeah, I dare say, if someone in the UK was EVER going to be thinking about grieving and mourning and writing about it, it would be during that time period. It doesn't necessarily need to be direct allegory for the events to have an impact on the story, due to the impact they had on the writer.
