As long as the tap water is safe to drink, I'll go with that every time. Bottled water is the stupidest thing, if tap is available.

Tap water can vary significantly while still being safe to drink, though.

We have had a drought for awhile in my area and how the tap water tastes (and smells!) is greatly affected by that. The water may be perfectly safe to drink, but it smells and tastes funny (it has a moldy taste/smell), hence the bottled water. Sure you can drink it, if you can stand funky tap water.
