Talk Show Hosts: Best, worst, so-so?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I really miss Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert isn't quite as exciting as he was as his character, nor do his segments feel quite as meaningful as Jon's did.

John Oliver is absolutely amazing, imo, the funniest by far.

I'm kind of undecided about Samantha Bee. Her show seems to have a lot of energy, but I am turned off by her style of speaking - she's at her best when she's really ripping into something/someone but sometimes I think she borders on just being cruel (like a segment bashing a child).

Conan remains the absolute worst. Nothing remotely funny or clever about him.

Stephen Colbert is the first talk show host I've ever actually liked. I never saw his old show, but I love him on the Late Show.

I loved Colbert's version of Caesar Flickerman and wish he'd do a show in character as him, complete with voiceless man servant Andro.

I miss Jon Stewart so much. Mostly because I watched him almost from the beginning until he went off the air. I actually enjoyed Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn when I was younger which was one of the shows that aired after the Daily Show but before the Colbert Report premiered.

I can't watch Conan.

Ditto, I love Join or Die but it's only once a week

Jon Stewart's rant when he appeared on Colbert's show last week reminded me all over again of just how much I miss him. God, if ever there was an election where the TDS/TCR duo of Stewart and Colbert were needed...

I do love Colbert on his current show, though. I agree that it is toned down in many ways compared to when he was hosting "The Colbert Report", but I still appreciate that he is doing political commentary in general, and as fun as his character on TCR was, I do like getting to see more of his own attitude on all of this craziness.

Seconded on John Oliver, too. And since we're mentioning late night hosts we miss in here, Craig fucking Ferguson. His late night show was just fantastic, and I would've LOVED to see what all he would've done and had to say in regards to this year's election. He could have quite the pointed, thoughtful commentary when needed, too.

Plus, his show was just an absurd blast in and of itself :D.

I have yet to see Samantha Bee's show. I keep planning on doing so when I see her mentioned and then I totally forget to check the guide to see when she's on here. I must get on that, 'cause I'm curious.

I also don't mind Larry Wilmore's show. I like that he touches on some things that don't always get as much attention in the news, and when he does talk about the big stories, he's got some good things to say on those as well.
