Depends on what the situation is. I mean, I don't think under any circumstances should you say you hate it, lol, but what I mean is, was this part of any sort of fic/art exchange? From your wording, it doesn't sound like it, but if it was, then yeah, you need to find something positive to say. But if someone just emailed you like, 'your fic inspired me!' you could get away with saying something like, 'wow, thanks for all your effort! I'm flattered something I wrote inspired you!' On the other other hand, if you just saw this art posted on tumblr on something and the person said it was based on your fic, you can pretend you never saw it. But I'm guessing you've had some sort of contact with them, they messaged you, etc. See if you can find something nice to say, even if it's about their efforts, and not the art itself. And don't be pressured into adding a link to the art in your fic. It's still your fic. (I'm someone who has received terrible, terrible art before, though it was on a big bang.)
