nayrt but when the complaint is "this series has gratuitous rape", pretty sure their issue is the gratuitous rape.

There were literally zero outrage over Theon's season-long sexual abuse and mutilation at the hands of Ramsay. People even made jokes about it.

Sansa gets raped off-screen and everyone loses their minds.

I actually have read plenty of outrage about Theon's abuse - mainly in how sexy women were seducing him and he was portrayed as getting into that, only to get almost comically castrated at that point.

And anyway, is your argument that GRRM (and HBO) has been treating its male and female characters equally in terms of sexualization? Because that's... blatantly and objectively incorrect. So why shouldn't people be more frustrated about the women's tendency to be raped when they are constantly being sexualized, even at inappropriate or unnecessary times? Theon's sexual abuse - if it was there beyond the obvious castration - wasn't portrayed as sexy. Nor was Theon being strung up near-naked. The camera didn't loom over him erotically. His abuse, in that sense, was dumb and gratuitous but not titillating. The same cannot be said of female characters who are constantly sexualized whether they are raped or not.

He wasn't getting into it at all -- he's clearly horrified at the women pawing at him. Go watch it on youtube. But you kind of proved my point by saying that more people were offended at the sexy women than anything else.

And I can't recall any rape scene being sexualized on GoT. The Jaime/Cersei scene was meant to be fucked up and the Sansa scene was also disturbing and entirely offscreen.

Nor was Theon being strung up near-naked. The camera didn't loom over him erotically.

He kinda was...? Did you miss all the bits with him strung up on the cross and Ramsay caressing him? Or the scene where Ramsay made him strip naked in front of him, asking him if he loves him and then proceeding to give him the bath? That's not 'erotic' or 'sexualized' enough for you?

lolno there hasn't been any outrage over Theon's abuse. Hell, after Sansa's rape, many people (mostly women) on tumblr kept referring to Theon's issues as "manpain", a derogatory term that implies he hasn't suffered personally at all, which is downright galling. And when they're not outright ignoring his abuse or saying he deserves it, they're either making jokes about his genital mutilation or shipping him with Ramsay.

The GOT fandom is just a gross mess when it comes to Theon.

Sounds like GoT fandom and its fans are always a mess, tbh. which is probably exactly the fandom the source material in question deserves.

Tumblrinas are always a mess regardless of what fandom

True, the GOT fandom in general is atrocious, but it really shows its ass when it comes to Theon, Dany, Cersei, and Sansa. Though at least the latter 3 get some love and leeway on Tumblr amidst getting shat on everywhere else.
