If I like a villain it's because I find something about the character compelling, especially if I want to seek out fanfic for them. This could mean that part of their personality pulls me in, or it's their past, or a relationship they have that interests me. It's basically the exact same reasoning that will attract me to good characters, there's just something to them that I like and makes me want to know more.

I also don't necessarily want to spend time with the characters I like, I just think they're fun or interesting to watch/read.
