The local writing group I tried for a while was like this, for the show AND the books. The show is sooooooo good omg you need to go watch it right now you don't know what you're missing, you like fantasy so you'll loooove this! GRRM writes so many things well! You'd learn so much from him if you read the books!
Well I'm sure he does a lot of things very well but it's not a series I'm interested in, and I'm pretty sure I can find other books I AM interested in whose authors do the same things just as well. Take a wild guess as to which book I'd rather spend my extremely limited free time engaging in.

And it wasn't only the GRRM-worship that got annoying, it was that they weren't capable of putting a filter on it and saving it for outside meeting time. I get it, you're all very excited about something you love and that's great, but unless you have a specific writing-related point to make with it, it doesn't belong in the meetings. bah *shakes her cane*
