A question for dildo-users.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
To preface this I am a dude who has never had the need or desire to use a dildo on myself or a partner, so I come from a place of total ignorance about the subject.

Here's the question. What makes a dildo good? I don't mean what is it used for obviously. What makes Dildo A better than Dildo B? What bells and whistles does Dildo C have that makes it cost more than A and B combined?? How do you know if you'll like one before you try it out because I assume after you try it out, you can't return a slightly used dildo?? What would make you rate a dildo 5 stars on Amazon as opposed to 4? or 3? or 2?

I now have "what makes a dildo good???" in my Google search history but that gave me stuff like "15 Common Household Things to Use as a Dildo" or "15 Best Sex Toys" and that is not what I'm looking for.

The thing is that really depends on who's using it. Personally, I'm quite fond of things with a nice girth that do not vibrate, but the majority of people I talk to like the vibrating versions. I prefer them not to look realistic, some people do.

Generally I'd say something vaguely dick-shaped.

You want to avoid it being too hard - it needs to be sturdy and "erect", but it needs some flexibility. As you didn't specify, it does sort of matter if it's for anal or vaginal use, especially if the person's not used to it, cause you don't want to go overboard with size.

I don't need a dildo for anybody, it's just that it never occurred to me before to wonder about it. All I ever thought about them was that they were shaped like dicks and some of them vibrate I guess, somehow, and that was the only differentiating factor I could name. Is any set standard for dildo goodness?

I'm not like a dildo scientist. Though there are more gimicky ones and more actually usable ones.

Re: A question for dildo-users.

Dildo scientist sounds like it'd be an interesting job. Somebody must have invented all the shapes and stuff.

Is it safe to assume that all dildos with the same material, size, and shape are basically the same, and the rest is fluff?

Well there are several materials that are safe/pleasant. And size preferences differ. Though super huge one are occasionally gimmicks (though some people use those).

Kinda related: its not quite the same but there are some bloggers who do experiments on toys! A common one is to cut up toys and leave them in a jar to see what happens, ala this http://dangerouslilly.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/sextoystoxicorsafe.png

If it helps, I googled "dildo selling points" and found this:

(And thanks for the laugh.)

"One easy way to gauge what size dildo you might like is to consider a partner’s penis or a toy that has worked well in the past. However, since even the most aroused penis becomes firmer and softer during sex, it’s only a rough estimate. Another way to get some input is to do the cucumber test"

This is a thing??? I am going to wonder about everybody at the supermarket buying multiple cucumbers now.

Nah, it's the eggplant buyers you really have to watch out for.

Ohh the different materials and stuff make more sense now though.

I am a Frequent dildo user and I have A Lot of Dildos and here are my opinions, but keep in mind not everyone is the same

In order of how important they are to me

1. Its made from safe, non porous materials. Lots of dildos aren't. The sex toy industry has no regulation. This is my number one requirement. Extra points if its from an ethical company, cause I am a nerd who cares about shit like that.

2. It has a shape I like. I like texture, but not everyone does. I like a lot of texture though. (example (nsfw obvs): https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0348/9029/products/Tantus_Echo_MidnightPurple_2_1024x1024.jpg?v=1391807629) Of course, this is something people learn. My first dildo was a basic, smooth dildo, but as I branched out I got more experimental and discovered texture. Other shapes include curved (for gspot stimulation) and realistic (I don't like realistic dildos but other people do)

3. Size compatible. Dildos list their size so that is easy.

4. Pretty color! I have a gold colored dildo and a bright green one.

but all in all its super personal

That's really informative, thanks.

You mentioned learning stuff, so what happens if you buy one and you don't like it? Are you stuck with it? I assume you can't return it after use. Is there a market for used dildos? Can you dispose of them like regular trash?

Re: A question for dildo-users.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah doubt many places let you return anything, just for safety reasons. I've seen some debate about that, cause at the moment there is not a great way to dispose of dildos you don't want, that I know of. Safe materials like silicone can be sterilized, but most people just seem turned off by the idea of 'used dildos'. (And admittedly, since I mentioned there is no regulation in the industry, it would be hard to prove it had been sterilized I suppose.) Most people just throw them away, or let them collect dust.

I wonder if there is any way to recycle silicone...

Re: A question for dildo-users.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Could they theoretically be recyclable" was going to be my next question, so lol

Ugh, I shelled out a LOT of money for a high-quality double-headed dildo strap-on, only to discover it wouldn't FIT in me no matter what I did. (And no, arousal and lube did not help. I think my cunt is just BROKEN. The few times I can stick anything in there, I either can't even tell anything is in me, or IT FUCKING HURTS.)

Fortunately, I have a fellow trans guy friend who is much stretchier than I am, and WAAAAAAAAY prefers penetration. I plan to give it to him next time we meet up.

Then I can say this friend has taken my cock. >:D

your friend wants your -used- dildo??

I think most of it comes down to personal preference. People will have different ideas about what size and shape and material feel best.

One thing that might be a little less variable is how easy it is to clean. I think that would be important to most people. For some reason my glass one sometimes takes a bit more scrubbing than my silicone one.

Re: A question for dildo-users.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
So it's just trial and error? Sounds like kind of a pain.

Are there any generally agreed-upon standards of dildo goodness at all?

Re: A question for dildo-users.

DA

Being insertable is always a plus.

OK, even that is probably up for debate. LMAO

Re: A question for dildo-users.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Made of safe materials, but a lot of people don't realize some could be unsafe.

But other then that - sex is really personal. There are a lot of sex toy reviewers out there though, so you can always just go see what other people like!

I'm reading some reviews on the site someone linked up above, and

"Oh my god!!! This was my first Fun Factory toy and I absolutely love that it is both anally and vaginally friendly! The vibrations are rumbly and deep, and fill up my entire body in pleasurable waves. I loveeee the ridges and flexibility of the curved tip. The toy has the perfect amount of drag for my taste as I am a texture girl. It is a great size for anal and vaginal penetration. The toy feels amazing when just squeezing around it with your pelvic floor muscles, thrusting, or twisting! Vaginally it massaged my g-spot at medium pressure. I prefer the softness to some other firmer toys for g-spot stimulation vaginally. Anally, this toy worked out fantastically!!!! The texture provides some great sensations and the minor tapering shape of the vibrator allowed for incredibly easy insertion. I've had a few months of anal play with plugs before and I was very surprised to see that the moody just slipped right in (after a lube shooter). The handle makes it easier to hold and move around. The curve hits my g-spot anally amazingly and the size gives a pleasurable sense of fullness. The only criticism I have is the ridged base isn't quite large or fat enough to add much noticeable sensations at the anal or vaginal entry way. All in all, this toy would be an excellent addition for you the solo person or relationship people!!!!!!!"

That is a whole lot more excited than I was expecting wow

Vibrating for me because I prefer penetration to get off, but I love the feeling of vibrations too. The best of both in one toy.

A better price usually involves one or more of the following:

1. Better materials: silicone, glass, steel, high-density plastic. All but the first one are going to be pretty hard. If treated well, these materials will last for years. Cheaper novelty toys are made from lower-grade porous, plastics, need to be covered with a condom, and will break down eventually. (Tragic story, a lot of Harryhausen's original work is falling apart because the movie industry used latex.) I put a condom on anyway because it makes cleanup easier.

2. Better craftsmanship: Lots of little stuff like mold quality and trimming off excess plastic from the mold.

3. Better design: A lot of really cheap designs are just a stick with maybe a clit tickler or sorta penis like. For "realistic" dildos you're probably getting a better representation of a penis. For more abstract designs, you're more likely to see curves intended for g-spot/prostrate pressure, or different types of texture.

4. Kink and aesthetics: Fantasy and animal dildos are a whole other price range. Then there's BDSM-related insertion toys including inflatable and electric toys, sets of different sizes for expansion and gaping, tails for pony and puppy play. High quality, much smaller market than your corner porn shop, only a handful of suppliers or mail order catalogs add up to a higher price.

5. Store Reputation: You'll probably pay more from a store that vettes its goods like Good Vibes than from a more mass-market store like Adam & Eve or Huster.

Sex toy shops usually don't take returns. My suggestion for considering a purchase is to think about what kind of penetration you like (or want to have), and pick something to match. For example, my favorite is just a bit longer and thicker than my fingers to reach the postrate.
