Hmm. If I like a villain, it's generally not for their villainy--it's because they care about something or someone and they treat that thing or person or people better than they treat everyone else, or they have a cause they believe deeply in that's not intrinsically evil but their actions in support of it are, or their ultimate cause is evil but their actions in support of it are good, or they have a code of honor that they won't violate.

It's interesting to see how they reconcile that desire to do right in one part of their life with their cruel or evil or harmful actions in the rest. Like, I'm generally not interested in world-destroying, baby-eating, kitten-skinning bastards of the "muhuhahah I'm so evil I'm gonna rape someone and set their family on fire and blow up a few planets just because" sort, although if they used to be good or better people sometimes it's fun or sad to see how they got that way.

I love villain redemption stories done well, but I don't really get villain fans who want to see their faves redeemed when there's nothing that suggests they might want redemption or be capable of good.
