I think this is the crux of it, rather than some kind of monetary investment paying off over time. It's a time investment - it's what you're familiar with. From a monetary perspective, I'm not sure that it does pay off. Higher price point/longevity vs lower price point/more frequent upgrades may actually come out pretty even in the end.
