It could. It could also be the case that sentimentality like that doesn't fit the tone they're going for.

In particular, in a non-realistic action show like Buffy, everyone should be horribly traumatized and emotional every single episode. Now I guess you do have a point there because some fans do unaccountably enjoy that kind of grim and gritty thing, but I dont think there's anything intrinsically superior about that approach.

But I feel like part of what OP is getting at (and I could be wrong) is not necessarily that every piece of fiction should deal with it all the time - but rather fiction almost never does, and it would be nice to see it more often without a "oh but its just stuff" message.

Not necessarily that Buffy should be traumatized every episode, but you know, maybe once in a while a character is upset that their car has been destroyed without the narrative acting like they're immature cause its just a car. (I've never seen Buffy idk if this is a good example but hopefully you know what I mean)
