So what you're saying is to turn a profit it has to triple its budget.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell if I know, I'm just giving you the media narrative.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing with the media narrative is that it has no actual relationship to the numbers the fucking thing does. It has a relationship to what the studios and other players want to do, right? But once they decide that, they'll use whatever reading of the numbers they want to justify the direction they want to go.

It's already done enough to make back its budget. It's up to the studios if they decide they want to be in this business or not, really.

OK, well it looks like a bomb to me.

Get yourself some glasses ASAP.

It's done well enough that a sequel's in the works, with or without China.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO they said the same exact thing with ASM2.

Until production actually starts jack shit has happened.

It has nothing to do with the "media narrative" -- it's what constitutes as making a profit for the studio.

Barely scraping by its budget (and that doesn't account for advertising and the money that goes to theaters) is not a financial profit.

Rule of thumb for movies is that their box office take should be at least 2.5x their budget in order to turn a profit.

Otoh, that rule gets complicated by things like how much the studio spent on advertising, how much they get from DVD sales (iirc, Pacific Rim came under for box office but did great on DVD sales, and that was a big contributing factor in getting the sequel greenlit; I wouldn't be surprised if Ghostbusters overperformed in DVD sales as well), and how much they get from toy sales (hugely important for Ghostbusters).

Aren't toy sales doing very well?

Edit: Yes, they are.

Hope the toys make the millions the film won't.

Oh wow someone in the comments linked to /r/kotakuinaction to prove how toy sales are completely failing and the article is wrong. Some people just refuse to give the reboot any credit of any kind.

Are you that fucking clueless as to how the movie box office goes? Do you think every dollar made goes straight to the studio? You at LEAST have to double the budget to "break even" and that's not a given.

(different anon) Good point.
