Wrt Buffy, isn't that the part in the series where she's playing everything off like it's no biggie while privately being horrifically depressed and wishing she were still dead? Because, if so, I feel as if that...colors her reaction a bit. She also has a (totally understandable) tendency toward bravado in general.

I think you make an interesting point, though. There are times when a character's shown as being attached to a possession in a positive way, but it's not often, and it's usually just one specific item. Might be good for development to have a character actually feel a sense of loss when his or her house is destroyed.
