Not to be a downer(?) here, but there's a whole area between 0% influence and 100% influence that the quote is suggesting, and most of these comments appear to be aware of that

Socialization and agency can and do coexist. If they didn't, then we wouldn't be able to recognize the sort of thing that Atwood is getting at.
