Because seriously, it amazed me that the only reaction was "well, no more Starbucks." Or something.

I understood why Buffy would have that reaction - but what about Willow and Xander, who grew up there?

I was thinking of this too. Buffy lost so much of the history of her childhood when her mom died - then her town disappears?

I get that perhaps she felt liberated from the bad things that Sunnydale represented to her, but it seemed odd to shrug it off that easily. And, as you say - Willow and Xander.

Mind you, I always found it odd that Buffy's friends thought Buffy was inappropriately depressed when she came back. Leaving the heaven/hell stuff, she had plenty of reason - for Buffy (subjectively speaking) it had been a matter of days since Joyce died. Who wouldn't be depressed at coming back to the permanent absence of the only parent who cared about her? Talk about failing to represent the emotional effects of loss...

Yeah. A while back, my dad went to his home city for a conference and one day when he had free time, he went for a walk in his old neighborhood. He found that his elementary school had been torn down and replaced with something else. He hadn't attended that school in 50 years and didn't seem to have particularly enjoyed his time there, but he was still all "Aw, my school!" :(

Reminds me of the scene from Grosse Pointe Blank where John Cusack's character realizes a convenience store/gas station (I forget exactly) has been built where his childhood home was, and he goes ballistic.
