Re: If all of someone's past relationships are with the same sex...

It's not wrong for you to think it. It is wrong for you to state it as "probably fact" to anyone else.

I disagree? If OP knew something secret that led them to believe Hot Guy is gay despite living his life as a straight guy, that would be one thing. Extrapolating based on the fact that he openly dates guys and openly talks about liking guys to say he's "probably gay" is exactly the right thing to do.

Well, no. The right thing to say would be "he might be gay." Which is wholly different from "probably gay."

First of all, those two things are pretty similar. Second of all, you are allowed to draw conclusions based on people's behavior!!!! People actually behave in certain ways with the knowledge and understanding that people will draw conclusions about them based on that!!!! If a man openly dates other men and talks to casual acquaintances about how hot he finds men, it is both reasonable and appropriate to say he's probably gay.

They're not, though. "Probably gay" means "nearly certainly" and all but erases bisexuality as an option. "Might be gay" keeps both options on the table. Even if you think he is gay not bi, it's incredibly rude to assume.

And yes, you are "allowed" to draw conclusions based on behavior. I never said you weren't. But again I say, it's only reasonable and appropriate to tell people he's "probably gay" if you're unwilling to accept bisexuality as a legitimate option. The non shitty thing to do would be to tell your friend he might be gay, or you think he's gay. Not to state things as fact and erase an entire sexuality.

Okay but saying "probably" doesn't erase the option - its saying based on the evidence presented you think gay is the most likely option, but is leaving a chance you are wrong. It does not indicate unwillingness to admit he could be bi imo.

Hmm, well that may be the dictionary meaning of the word "probably", but people could use it with an intent of it having a milder sense. I know I use it a lot, and I tend to mean "very likely" with an implication of "not absolutely" tied into it.

So I don't see "probably" as totally pushing the option of bisexuality off the table.

da but I don't think there is anything wrong with "probably", its not like its a definitive statement like "he is gay"
