This is mainly to do with the fact that there are other sources of entertainment competing for their attention. People therefore tend to very very picky about what films they choose to see.
It's a shame, if this film is seen as a 'bomb' because it might then convince the studios to stop putting out films with females in lead roles (this despite the fact that men were still the lead in 78% of films last year https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/feb/10/number-female-hollywood-lead-parts-rises-not-women-colour) because they will think that they won't make money (despite the fact that 'force awakens' did phenomenal box office worldwide. But hey, the studios are stupid.)
Half of the world's population are women, OP and yes we actually want to see films that, every once in a while, have us in them, you know doing stuff other than just standing around looking pretty.
Also, why are you so invested in this film failing anyway? (Apart from your clear misogyny? And don't start with the whole 'I'm annoyed I can't complain about this film without being labelled a misogynist!' For you to have this much joy over a film failing, then yes, just admit it. You don't want this film to succeed because of the 'icky women' factor. Ok, ask yourself this. Did you care about Point Break failing? The original, like Ghostbusters, was fun, but hardly life changing. Do you care that they have remade Ben Hur? That is seen as a classic. Where's your anger over that?)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)"You don't like this film? MISOGYNIST!" is definitely a reason to be happy about it failing. Whether that's fair to the film or not depends on your point of view, but it's a reaction I understand.
