I just wanted to say that I agree with this 100%. It's sad when someone else's opinion - and how much they throw it around - influences a person's reaction or view to something. I was perfectly fine with Royai until I saw how snarling some fans (the ones I had to deal with.) are about how it's right and as if shoving a whole bunch of 'evidence' at a person is suddenly going to make them interested in the pairing.

Maybe it's just because FMA is the only fandom I've gotten so deep into- but it seems to be one of the absolute worst on this topic.

Sadly there seems to be the same thing in just about every fandom I dip my toes into. In Dr. Who it's Saint Rose, who lifted the good Doctor out of a lifetime of chastity and brought him true love. At least according to a vocal minority. In Avatar it's the Aang/Katara shippers. And the thing is, it's not even a huge number of people doing this, it's just a couple in each fandom who stink up the ship with their smugness.

I missed the great Manga vs Anime debates (or maybe I just wasn't paying attention, so thankfully I can still enjoy both on their individual merits.

I was under the impression that it's a lot more popular in FMA just due to the obscene amount of 'options' the fans are given. That could just be my uneducated guess, though, based on the fact that there are more popular pairings, and other series I'm into seem to just focus on possibly three OTPs that most of which are generally canon and pairings are -handed- to you, via the legit plot.

With FMA you have anime or manga to consider, canon pairings, the lack of canon pairings, how much interaction each character has with another character - and of course the people that will ship two characters together solely because it's unlikely to ever happen. (Which just seems much more widely varied than other series... from what I've seen.)

I just go by things such as - example: Sesshomaru and Miroku is a rare pairing in Inu-Yasha and my friend has a nightmare of a time getting any fic or product for it, but the first rare pairing I can think of in FMA is JeanxEd, and I've seen plenty of doujinshi and fic even -without- looking. That translates to me as FMA seems more 'anything goes' than most other fandoms I've had experience in, but again only speaking from personal experience... maybe it's more about how I perceive things/what I notice, than what's really going on.

Unfortuntely, even without being in those fandoms I've heard all about those pairing wars as well (mostly on here.) I've actually decided to stay away from things like Doctor Who and Supernatural just because I'm afraid previous bias from these louder fans have already set a specific 'idea' in my head of what I should 'expect' to find in both series... but yeah, no matter where you go -every- fandom's got the die hard fan that's more than willing to cause chaos in the name of their sacred OTP - and it's the perfect example of 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease.' We all hear them, so it seems like a majority of people, and they spoil the fun for everyone else.

I'm sure you weren't paying attention, since I'm under the impression we joined the fandom around the same time. I think I remember seeing introductory posts from you in [livejournal.com profile] fm_alchemist when I was still fairly new there- but yes, with FMA in particular (more-so than other fandoms I've been in, anyway.) I've noticed a large anime vs. manga battle and sub vs. dub war. Personally, I'm of the 'Can't we all just get along?' variety... but that could just be because I've found flaws in both and accepted that, and love them anyway.

but, I've rambled for awhile. I do apologize, as I have a tendency to do that in order to explain myself clearly - for fear of coming off rude - and wind up over explaining and somehow sounding arrogant, anyway.

In Avatar it's the Aang/Katara shippers.

Oh yes. I saw someone make a post about Katara interacting with Zuko, and get jumped on with comments like "OMG you're making all this up you moron Zutara will never happen!" Even though they weren't a Zutara shipper and the post wasn't about Zutara.

I like Aang/Katara and like most ships the people who ship it tend to just enjoy themselves but the people out there going "It's canon and now you all have to STFU" make me wish they'd both run off with someone else in the final episode.

Me too... and I hate ship bashing! It's like they bring out the absolute worst in me and I sink to their emotional level.

Personally, I think it would be halarious if in the final episode Zutara became canon -- just because the evil part of me wants to watch the heads explode.

My problem with Aang/Katara is I consider them both too young to ship consensually without hitting my chan squick. Thing is I can ship them in abusive relationships because apparently two morally bad things cancel each other out in my mind, and I get the "ooh that's deliciously horrible" reaction rather than the "aw that's so cute and I'm so wrong to think that" one. And this is why I don't generally get on people's case about their squick peculiarities, because mine make no sense.

No no, unfortunately many fandoms are way worse than FMA as far as the shipping wars go XD; (Course, I'll also admit that for this reason, I get inexplicably sad when people try to brand the poor fandom with the title of Too Wanky To Enjoy...seriously, there used to be fandom spaces where disagreeing with the board admin got you banned XD; )

Yeah, that's rather sad. Now that you mention it that's probably why I'm under the impression that FMA is by-far the worst. The number of fans running around complaining that the fandom-wank keeps them from enjoying the series. Or the fans scared me away, or... whatever reason people give.

Even here, where a lot of fandom wank is brought up- it seems like FMA is the overpowering fandom -known- for scaring innocent people away with our epic opinion wars. Or was, when it was popular enough to be in nearly every post.
