Scuse me while I be a dick.

How? How is it epic? How is normal plot and typical characters, overly done battles epic... in any way? It's taking dragonball z levels of power, mecha, and ever stereotyped anime character in existence and force them all together? Sorry... maybe if you give me a convincing argument I'll bite.

I'm not a big fan of TTGL, but "epic" can be a value-neutral term implying simply scale of plot, setting, and character rather than artistic merit.

TTGL was designed to be epic to the point of ridiculousness: over-the-top characters, sweeping breadth of setting, wildly dramatic plot, etc. This doesn't mean it's a brilliant work of art, just that it fits one definition of epic.

I'll accept that definition. However, I feel the people that disagree with me are disagreeing with my definition.

Dragonball Z would be epic, too, if it wasn't so poorly paced.

It's full of overblown characters, telling a story that is writ as large as possible, filled with manly spirit and meaningful sacrifices and drills the size of galaxies. It's a gripping tale of freedom, progress, hope, and the will to live. And it's one of the few stories I'm willing to dissect for meaning, because unlike most of the time it actually is there.

I'm not sure what definition of epic you're using, because TTGL pretty much defines itself by the word.

epic, i feel is being defined very differently, as the poster said above. Epic proportions to me do not mean epic. Epic to me means something that feels big when still retaining small instances. Don't get me wrong. I didn't HATE it. It just didn't feel new, eye-opening to me. It felt like I've seen it before. I guess I have the habit of attributing everything to everything, constructing connections where they don't necessarily below. I loved particular moments. I loved the episode upon first meeting Rossieu, and later when Simon was imprisoned. However, it was deconstructed by everything surrounding it. I suppose its hard to like it when you can't stand how the main characters feel like things you've seen before. Simon and Kamina are archetypes that have been done and done again. Yoko and Nia as well... it's hard for me to get past that...
