Having worked in a publishing firm for many years now, I have to say I disagree on the assumed conculsion that you think all published stuff is good. that is far from the truth.

Also, you fail to take into account the egostroking method employed by many people called 'self publishing', which I personally know a lot of people do after we turned them down. So personally, I find there is just as much epic trash printed material out there as there is on the Internet. Really, it's just a matter of whether you have enough cash to finance your own publications.

So even though I do somewhat agree that some webcomics are inferior, not all of them suck hardcore. There are things you have to consider when you want to make it in print with publishing houses, sometimes it involves a lot of copyright and content control which creators themselves are not prepared to deal with.

Just my 2 cents.

hahahah, self publishing is "ego stroking?" I might be inclined to agree with you if you were talking about novels, but in comics self publishing is not only a perfectly viable, but often very successful option. Why don't you go talk to Aardvark-Vanaheim, Cartoon Books, or many hundreds of other self-published artists before you jump to conclusions?

I'm... not sure how the successfulness/failure of self-publication is relevant to what I've just said, although I'm guessing you must think I think self-publication is trash, so I must stress that I do not. It falls under my same views on webcomics, that there are good and bad stuff churning out from both ends.

My bad though, I should have held back jaded snarkism for a term that's a little less sensitive than 'ego stroking' perhaps -- like 'personal-fulfillment', which I think any self-respecting creator will (and should) possess for their work. Good or bad, it's a labour of love and I can respect that much. One can't really deny the fact that personal fulfillment IS part of the reason why people want to have their stuff in print (because of the 'perceived credibility' of print media that many people - including our misinformed secret poster - have.) That perception is changing, yes, but everyone still seeks recognition the way most people would only acknowledge in its most tangible form, after all... I don't even think it's a bad thing, so long as one is really genuinely aware of where they really stand in the real world of critical, jaded, and possibly frustrated people.
