Why is that more fitting? Draco is still a pureblood even if he starts changing.

It's not so much what he is but the whole baggage of prejudices coming with his upbringing. If you grow up in a family like this, I imagine it's a lot like growing up in a cult: lots of indoctrination up to a point where you don't even think about ever questioning the potentially outlandish beliefs you were taught.
I don't even ship this, but I imagine that for this ship to work, Draco would have to do a lot of changing his mindset, even his whole worldview. That's why I think my comparison fits.

Right, but it's not the fact that they're of different blood that's the problem? It's the ideology, so if he drops it that's significant.
