I sympathize, but learning how to graciously thank people for crappy gifts is part of being an adult. I'm sometimes puzzled by how many people never learned this as a kid (you guys always got what you wanted for Christmas?) or seem to think that it's an impossible feat. It isn't. Find one or two positive things, no matter how small, and thank them for their time and effort. No biggie.

Way to be condescending. I am an adult and I have plenty of practice thanking people while lying through my teeth. I don't feel I should have to to someone who blatantly ignored one of my DNWs. They clearly wrote what they wanted and not for me but my name's stuck on the fic. I'll still say the nice things that I don't believe but this is venting thread, so I'm going to vent.

I honestly do not get this. I keep seeing this on kink memes, too, and stuff. I don't get why people fill prompts but blatantly disregard something the prompter said they dislike.

Who said anything about lying? People seem to think that you can't possibly thank someone for a shitty gift without "lying through their teeth", which is puzzling. You don't have to say you loved it, just find one positive thing to say about and thank them.

And if there's a DNW, it is going to be lying because that's going to overshadow any good part. Yes, I can find one decent thing but to suggest that that decent thing will overcome the fact that I'm being forced to read a DNW is a lie. I am not thankful to them for writing a DNW so thanking them for the effort is a lie. I would have rather not had a fic in this case. But I'm not going to be a douche, so I will thank them.
