"swimsuit" or "bathing suit"?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to write again, and I have a character talking about buying a swimsuit. And part of me wants her to say "bathin' suit," with the /n/ instead of /ŋ/, and part of me thinks that's probably affected for the character's dialect, and she would just say "swimsuit."

What do you say? Also, what would you expect your mom to say in a conversation with you? And can you tell me your region?

Southeastern USA, and both my mother and I would call it a bathing suit.

1) What character is this? Where and when is she from? What dialect are you trying to recreate? In general, I find that writing out dialect like that tends to feel forced, and choosing region/period-specific phrasing works better.

2) Do you mean what would my mom call a swimsuit? She'd call it a swimsuit.

3) Region: US northeast.

From the Plains and I say swimsuit (because I'm not taking a bath in that pool) and so does my 63 year old mom. I feel like my grandma might have said bathing suit, though.

I say both, and so does my Mom. I'm from Chicago!

Eastern Canada. My mum and I would use either word. I think I have a slight preference for bathing suit.

Southeastern US, and my mom and I both say bathing suit. (Well, my mom pronounces the th as a d and leaves the g off so it sounds more like "baydin" suit, but it's supposed to be bathing suit. She just has a really weird accent/way of speaking.)

I say both. I think so does my mom? I want to say we more commonly say swimsuit but I'm not actually sure. Southwest USA

swimsuit: usually refers to a woman's bathing suit

bathing suit: generally most used term, gender-neutral, applies to anything someone might wear while swimming (bikinis or trunks)

swimwear: also gender-neutral, but used more in the context of shopping in department stores ("hey let's go look at the swimwear")

The terms are completely interchangable, but "bathing suit" is more old fashioned. My mother would say either.

In the decade+ years of competitive swimming I did, though, we called it a "swimsuit" 100% of the time. "Bathing suit" was a term for dirty pubs. That and "racing suit" to differentiate the full-length, collared, compression suit from the loose, older, conventional "practice suit."

Region: Pacific Northwest, Canada.

I've heard both, but "swimsuit" is more common, I think.

Indianapolis, IN, Midwest, US

Ireland here. Of the two we'd use 'swimsuit' more often, but more normally they're called togs or swimming togs around here.
