I have been reading fanfic for 20 years now and I still come across things that surprise me (though, not always in a good way). Of course, I've pretty much always been multi-fandom and some of them have been really, really huge.

I tried writing original fanfic but that's not what most people want to read. When you get nothing in response, you kind of lose the will to keep writing that original stuff when you can write tropey things that get hundreds of kudos and comments.
