Fandom is not a single entity to which this kind of agency can be ascribed. It is a collection of different people who do and feel a bunch of different things. And even if some people are being dumb about trans headcanons - and I'm sure there are some people who are - that doesn't invalidate the arguments in favor of either piece of it.

+1. In the MLP fandom, trans Rainbow Dash was actually not that common. A lot of people wanted nonstandard heroines, got nonstandard heroines, and were fine with that.

Of course, I'd also like to argue the implication that Rainbow Dash being trans would invalidate her being a girl . . .

OP - I tried to make it clear her being a trans MAN would invalidate her being a girl, since Rainbow Dash would be a man then. Being a trans woman would not invalidate that at all.
