Jeff/Annie from Community is the definition of this for me.

If you watch the first two seasons of Community, it was so obvious Dan Harmon was pushing for a Jeff/Britta endgame. The problem was it was so fucking cliched that I couldn't stand it. Cool douche tries to impress hot quirky girl who ain't interested. They bicker. They fight. They have zero in common. They eventually fall for each other.

Blech. Seen it a million times before. Didn't feel like watching it again.

Since they were playing around with Jeff/Annie, maybe to make Annie "the spoiler" who'll delay the eventual Jeff/Britta union, I just started shipping Jeff/Annie out of spite. I admit it. It was petty.

Then I fell in love with the damn ship. I love the way they left it. I love the fact that Dan admits they're in love with each other and will eventually end up together. I fucking love it. I don't care.

Hoisted by my own petard there.
