I've actually got a trio of characters that have a poly relationship, and it works well for all of them.

The two males have an intense closeness with the female who has been their mutual friend for a long time as well. At first the two males had an intensely belligerent relationship--not even related to the female, but related to an event in their personal histories. However, as they worked through it, it became more of a playful sniping relationship between them, and overall friendlier like it had been during their childhood.
